Breaking the Silence Around Money

Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get enough attention—money and the unique challenges we face as Latinas.

We’re starting businesses faster than anyone else, contributing over $767 billion annually to the U.S. economy, and breaking down barriers. But let’s be real—behind those stats, there’s a lot we don’t talk about.

For many of us, earning a living isn’t just about covering our own expenses. It’s about sending money to family back home, helping loved ones in need, or being the person everyone counts on in a crisis. Sound familiar?

I know this story all too well. More than ten years ago, I left my corporate job to follow my dream of building a coaching business. I was excited and hopeful, but honestly, it was tough. The financial pressure on my family was overwhelming, and I felt this constant shame for putting us in such a hard spot.

What made it even harder? The judgment. Friends and family questioned my choices, and some thought I was completely out of my mind for leaving a “good job.” I started doubting myself too.

But here’s the thing: I believed in my dream. And even though it was a rough road, I wouldn’t trade that journey for anything. Today, I can proudly say we’re debt-free, we’ve paid for our daughter’s college, invested in real estate, and moved into our dream home. We’re not millionaires, but we’re building something meaningful—a legacy for our family.

Through my coaching practice, I’ve realized that I’m not alone. Many of us feel stuck trying to balance cultural expectations with our own financial goals. One of my clients said something that really hit home:

“Sometimes I feel like my family doesn’t see me as a person, but as the family bank. It’s draining because I feel bad if I say no.”

If that resonates with you, let’s explore how we can reclaim our power over money, let go of guilt and shame, and create the financial future we deserve.

Supporting Families and Building Dreams

For many of us, earning a living isn’t just about paying bills. It’s about supporting our loved ones. Sending money to family for emergencies, medical bills, or education is just part of life. It’s a beautiful way to show love and care, but it can also leave us feeling stretched thin.

Did you know? Latina entrepreneurs are starting businesses at six times the national average. That’s incredible! But balancing business success with family obligations can feel like a juggling act—especially when Latinas earn just 57 cents for every dollar white men make.

Letting Go of Guilt: A Necessary Step for Growth

We must let go of guilt—it doesn’t help. In fact, it makes building a business or achieving financial goals so much harder.

When you’re constantly feeling awful about yourself or your choices, it drains your energy and clouds your vision. Guilt convinces you that prioritizing your goals is selfish, but the truth is, letting go of guilt is an act of self-care and empowerment.

I learned this the hard way. During my most difficult financial moments, guilt made me question every step I took. Was I doing enough for my family? Did I make the right choice by leaving my corporate job? That guilt weighed me down, slowing my progress and making me feel like I wasn’t worthy of success.

Here’s the truth: Guilt doesn’t serve you—it holds you back.

Tips for Releasing Guilt:

  • Reframe Your Choices: Every step you take toward your goals is a step toward creating stability for your family and yourself. It’s not selfish; it’s necessary.
  • Practice Self-Compassion: Remind yourself that you’re doing the best you can with the resources and knowledge you have.
  • Focus on Your Why: Keep your larger purpose in mind. Whether it’s providing for your kids or breaking generational cycles, your “why” is bigger than the guilt.

Letting go of guilt is a gift you give to yourself. It frees you to focus on what matters most building a life and a legacy that you’re proud of.
